Baker Hughes: Canada’s rig count jumps 12 units

Canada has added 12 rigs for the week ended Sept. 18, according to Baker Hughes data. At 64 rigs, the count is 55 fewer than the 119 units drilling this week a year ago. With 30 rigs drilling, Canada’s oil-directed rig count was up 11 for the week. The gas-directed rig count in Canada increased by 1 unit to reach 34.

The overall US rig count is up slightly this week. Up 1 unit, the count reached 255 rigs working for the week ended Sept. 18, Baker Hughes said. The count is down 613 units from the 868 rigs working this time a year ago.

The number of rigs drilling on land was up 2 week-over-week with a total of 240 units. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was unchanged at 1 unit for the week. The number of rigs drilling offshore fell by 1 unit to 14.

US oil-directed rigs decreased by 1 from last week to reach 179 units. This time a year ago, 719 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas increased by 2 units to reach 73 rigs, 75 fewer than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, three saw an increase this week. Texas, Louisiana, and West Virginia each saw a single unit increase to reach 106, 38, and 8 units, respectively.

New Mexico’s rig count fell by 3 units to hit 43 this week.

Nine states remained unchanged this week, namely Pennsylvania, 18; Oklahoma, 12; North Dakota, 9; Ohio, 5; Colorado, 5; California, 4; Alaska, 3; Wyoming, 1; and Utah, 0.
