Asia IPA market spurred by Europe’s demand surge

With Europe’s spike in isopropanol (IPA) demand amid the coronavirus pandemic, Asia’s IPA market turned increasingly bullish as supply tightened.

As demand continued to outstrip supply in Europe, traders and buyers have turned to Asia to procure IPA, some to provide more sources of IPA, while others who were not in the IPA business entered the market, hoping to earn a quick buck.

In the ongoing Asia-to-Europe arbitrage window, iso-tanks from Asia were concluded in a wide range, as prices climbed daily, on numerous inquiries at $1,000-1,500/tonne FOB (free on board) NE (northeast) Asia in iso-tanks, with loading timings vary from prompt shipping to H2 April shipping.

One bulk transaction was concluded at around $1,100/tonne CFR (cost & freight) Europe for end-April loading, taking into account the risk as voyage time could take as long as two to three months.

All these transactions have led to less cargoes for the Asian region, as suppliers prefer to sell to Europe on more lucrative margins.

The majority of Asian suppliers were sold out for April, with little to no bulk available until May.

Tentative May offers were at $900-950/tonne FOB NE Asia and $940-960/tonne CFR SE (southeast) Asia.

A deal was concluded early in the week at $960/tonne FOB NE Asia for a 1,000 tonne cargo to southeast Asia.
